Well, first I would get my feet wet by jumping over the rotor movment and advanced computer control. Find a D.C. signal (Automatic Gain Control) inside your tuner and feed this to an A/D converter hoocked up to logger software (Labjack U12 or build a cheap one from kit at http://www.Radiosky.com)
Download "Radio skypipe" PC logger software(free) and "Radio-Eyes" (this is a sky map) to find radiosouces of interest.
Go for Meridian transits and choose different declinations. Do alot of drift scans to get the feel of things. Start with Sun transits and work your way down to weaker and weaker radiosources.
Best of luck,
