I wonder if it is possible to set up a unit at home to fashion one's own messages and sent them to extraterrestrials.

Build a Radio Telescope

On the SARA Grant Page http://www.radio-astronomy.org/?q=node/32 there are links to several good beginner projects for radio astronomy. Radio Jove and SuperSID both have active user groups that are very helpful.
