Small Radio Telescope for schools in London UK

By Peter Loader - Posted on 22 January 2010

Hi SARA.

I'm a non-specialist trying to set up a CASSI SRT for an Inner London Borough called Hackney. My aim is to generate interest in science in a school population that has generally switched off from it. I'd be really pleased to hear from anyone who has experience in running a SRT in a secondary / high school environment, especially if you've developed some good teaching materials or projects!

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

We (The UK Radio Astronomy Association) are working with a school group in the UK to provide a radio astronomy observatory, based on our Starbase software coupled with a VLF Receiver and Magnetometer. We also have a 12 GHz Receiver based system which is targeted at the radio astronomy beginner, with a set of radio astronomy 'experiments'.

If you e-mail me (alutley@elawuk.com) I'll be happy to arrange a demo.

Stanford University has teamed with SARA to distribute SuperSID (Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance) monitors to teachers and students all over the world.

Stanford has developed materials for teachers and students to use these monitors and learn about space weather and how to detect solar flares. There is more information at this link http://www.radio-astronomy.org/node/142.

Check out the files under "Distribution" on the left of the Stanford page to look at some of the manuals.
