From Atlanta:
Take I-85 north to Charlotte, then I-77 north to Pulsaki VA. Go southwest on I-81 for 10 miles, then continue north on I-77 again to Beckley WV. Pickup I-64 east to White Sulphur Springs where you take WV 92 northeast for 58 miles to Greenbank. (Yes there are more direct routes on the map, but they can best be described as wild and scenic highways. 250 from Staunton to Monterey and across the mountains to Bartow (where the Hermitage Motel is located) is taken by a few each year. Makes for good stories in the dorm. Very curvy roads with switchbacks. Drivers can take it..pasengers hate it.)
From Washington DC:
Take I-81 southwest to VA-39/42 south of Staunton. Go west till WV-92 joins and branches back off to the right. Follow 92 northeast 22 miles to Greenbank.
From Pittsburg PA, submitted by Ed Cole:
In 1998 I did the Wash. D.C.-Staunton-Bartow approach...ugh! So last year I flew into Pittsburgh. Here's a description of the Pittsburgh drive:
The drive from Pittsburgh is quite easy as most of the drive is on expressway or divided highway. If coming from the Pittsburgh Airport, its 8 miles to I-94. Go south 75 miles to Morganstown, WV. Continue south on I-94 another 50 miles to Exit-99 [near Weston, WV], and take US-33 [divided hwy] 43 miles east to Elkins, WV. Go through Elkins and keep watch for the turnoff south on US-250/State-55. Take the two-lane road 17 miles to Huttonsville where State-55 and US-250 split. Travel east on US-250 to Bartow and then 9 miles south on State-92/28 to Greenbank. Only the last 30 miles from Huttonsville is mountain driving [one pass over Cheat Mtn]. About five hours from Pittsburgh allowing one lunch stop.

Here are the directions I use from Hartford,Ct., which can be used as from Boston also....I take I-84 west into PA where I Pick up I-81 South until I hit Staunton,Va,Exit 225 where there is a short connector road to VA route 250 which will take you to Bartow W.Va connecting with W.Va route 28 and then onto Green Bank. A note is that I avoid New York City as much as I can, last year I went thru NYC and it cost me one hour longer(10 vs 9) and a few bridge tolls.... .Double check that exit 225 for me,my map isn't clear there.

From Florida, Karen Jensen offers these directions:
MapQuest.com can give you a good map printout of how to get to Green Bank NRAO --- its adjacent to the very small town of Green Bank, WV. I go up I-95 to I-26, then I-77 at Columbia SC. Then its either stay on I-77 to Beckley, WV and catch I-64 East to WV 92 North, or you can skip off I-77 at Wytheville onto I-81 to Lexingtonton and take I-64 West to US 220, then WV 92 on into Green Bank. US219 is a beautiful drive if you're going to be on the road in the daytime --- goes along the mountain ridge at about 4000-4500 feet elevation. You can take it all the way up to the tiny little town of Walnut and come across County 66 East back to 92 just south of Green Bank. Although it looks closer on the map to go up I-81 past Covington to Waynesboro and go west on 275, DON'T DO IT unless you are ready for a very windy mountain road --- its a difficult drive, esp. at night, with lots of dear darting in front of you and an average speed of probably 20 mph.
