Mary Watson Memorial Astronomy Research Endowment

Mary Watson was a valued member of SARA and a strong supporter of introducing kids to astronomy. She worked as a volunteer at Tamke Allan Observatory and contributed in many ways, perhaps most importantly, to answering student questions and assisting them with their projects. The Mary Watson Memorial Astronomy Research Endowment specifically mentions and encourages research in Radio Astronomy by undergraduate students, particularly girls. One of the stipulations of the endowment charter is that the President of SARA is one of 3 decision-makers for the student grant applications.

In Mary Watson's memory, and consistent with its educational outreach mission, SARA is proud to contribute to the Mary Watson Memorial Astronomy Research Endowment the sum of $150, the maximum grant allowable under SARA's Student Project Grants initiative to support one student.

Mary was a young and talented amateur astronomer, avid in radio astronomy with a love of people and a passion to share knowledge with the burgeoning minds. An application to contribute to this scholarship is found on the Tamke-Allan Observatory (TAO) web site. TAO is operated by Roane State Community College.

Dr. David Fields, the observatory director, SARA Board member, associate and friend, and dedicated companion to Mary, has kindly asked us include the eulogy for Mary, which SARA member John C. Mannone had humbly shared with Mary's friends. It is available here in Portable Document Format.download Adobe Acrobat Reader
